Some patients with diabetes or dentures may need to attend dental cleanings every 3 months.
Our Northampton dentist will perform an oral exam to get a general idea of any problems like discoloration and visible signs of tooth decay or gum inflammation. If necessary, x-rays will be taken to get a closer look at the tissues that can’t be seen with the naked eye. This can reveal underlying oral health problems that you are unaware of.
Using a manual or ultrasonic scaler, we will scrape away plaque and tartar buildup from above the gum line and between the teeth.
Using a very powerful electric toothbrush and gritty toothpaste, we polish/clean the teeth which removes surface stains, bacteria, and food debris. After this, the teeth are flossed to remove any lingering food particles, plaque, or toothpaste that is stuck between the teeth.
After we have scaled and thoroughly cleaned your teeth, a fluoride varnish is applied to the teeth to remineralize your enamel. This strengthens your enamel, making it more resistant to acid attacks that cause cavities.
If we detect any oral health problems during your checkup, we will schedule treatment for you to restore your oral health. Otherwise, we can schedule your next dental cleaning for 6 months from now.
During a professional cleaning, we thoroughly scale and polish your teeth to remove plaque and tartar buildup to prevent bacteria from turning into tooth decay or gum disease. These regular appointments are also necessary because many oral health problems don’t cause symptoms right away.
Since you may be unaware that you have cavities or gum disease and early detection is important to prevent the worsening and spread of these conditions, regular checkups enable us to catch the early warning signs of these conditions so that we can reverse them before they get any worse.
Cleanings also remove surface stains to reveal a brighter smile and remove organic compounds that cause a foul sulfur smell in the mouth. You will be left with fresher breath, a whiter smile, and healthier teeth.
Dental cleanings are a great preventive tool against tooth loss.
